With electricity rates on Molokai almost twice the state average, some small businesses are turning to alternative energy sources to help offset the costs.
The Friendly Market Center grocery store in Kaunakakai, for example, recently installed an 81-kilowatt photovoltaic system on its rooftop. The store says the $700,000 system should generate a third of its energy needs.
“By installing this system and other energy-efficient technologies, we can offset skyrocketing energy costs and hold the line on the cost of groceries,” said Crystal Egusa, whose husband Jeff is president and general manager.
Egusa declined to say what the company pays for electricity, but said the PV setup is expected to shave about $4,000 off Friendly Market’s monthly bill.
